Gas Prices Dropping In Some Areas

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Many Triangle gas stations are still hovering around the $4.00 a gallon mark, but if you look closely, you'll see many others are starting to drop in price.

The national average is at $4.07, down two cents from yesterday.

North Carolina's average is also down, at $4.01 per gallon.

The Triangle average is one cent higher, but we found several places under four dollars, including the Hess on Capitol Boulevard selling regular unleaded for $3.86 per gallon.

"That's good for right now," said Chris Mann, as he filled up.  "But it needs to be $2.86."

Mann says at the current rates, it costs about $70 to fill up his truck.

"That hurts bad ...  I'm going to put $10 in and get on down the road," said Mann with a laugh.  "Another dollar will come another day."

He's hopeful that dollar will get him more gas than it has recently.

And he's not the only one who thinks any little drop could be a good sign.

"Maybe a good indication that we've reached the limit that it's not going to continue to go up," said Van Hawkins.  "Demand's fallen off enough that it's not going to continue to go up."

Hawkins was watching his fuel gage closely this afternoon, trying not to return his rental truck with any more gas than necessary.

"I've got to put a quarter tank in it," said Hawkins.  "And I don't want to put any more."

Some drivers say they can't get too excited about the drop; $3.86 is still unbelievably high compared to this time last year.

"It's like now we're conditioned to expect higher prices," said Kurt Henderson.  "So now three dollars is what two years ago was two dollars."

The idea of a tax holiday seems to be completely off the table, because it would cost too many people their jobs. Now, law makers are actually talking about raising gasoline taxes by as much as a dime per gallon.
