Durham Appoints Sustainability Manager

DURHAM, N.C.

Durham County officials have named Tobin Freid as the new Sustainability Manager for the City and County of Durham.

 

According a release to the media by Durham county, "[the] new position was established with the adoption of the City of Durham and Durham County Greenhouse Gas Emissions Plan last year.  Freid will be responsible for implementing the recommendations included in the plan."

 

County Manager Mike Ruffin said in the release, "I believe that her educational background and work experience are very applicable to her responsibilities as the City and County Sustainability Manager." 

 

Patrick baker agreed with Ruffin's assesment. "We have pledged to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent from 2005 levels by 2030 in our community.  This is a major undertaking for the City and County and Tobin is going to bring the necessary knowledge and oversight skills to monitor our progress in achieving this goal," Baker said.

 

According to the statement by the county:

 

Prior to coming to Durham, Fried has been employed by Triangle J Council of Governments since 2002 and most recently served as Project Coordinator for Energy and Environment.  She has been responsible for a number of Triangle J Council's programs including the Triangle Clean Cities Coalition, Triangle Best Workplaces for Commuters, and Upgrade and Save. 

 

Freid has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Policy and Urban Planning from the University of California, Santa Cruz.  She has a Master of Arts degree from Tufts University with a concentration in International Environment and Natural Resource Policy.  She holds a Master of Arts in Environmental Policy degree from Duke University with a concentration in Resource and Environmental Policy and Sustainable Development.  She also served on the Advisory Committee for the City of Durham and Durham County Greenhouse Gas and Criteria Air Pollutant Emissions Inventory and Local Action Plan for Emission Reductions. 

 

Freid will start the new position on April 7.  She will be paid an annual salary of $ 60,000.
