Recordings of radio traffic that captured the shooting death of a University of North Carolina student indicate that shots were fired 35 seconds after his car was stopped by officers on Interstate 85.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported Thursday that Archdale police released the recordings, which do not reveal whether or not 21-year-old Courtland Smith was armed or threatening.
Smith had called 911 while on the road, telling the dispatcher he was trying to kill himself, had been drinking and was carrying a 9mm pistol. A police report says Smith confronted the officers.
Five seconds after officers said Smith got back in his car, an officer is heard shouting, "Subject down! Subject down!" and another says, "shots fired."
Pharr Smith, the father of the victim, declined comment on the report.
