The Carolina Theatre of Durham Inc. will present the 2nd Annual Holiday Bawl, a free double-feature screening of An Affair to Remember at 4:30 p.m. and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2008. Both films will be presented in their original 35 mm format and screened in Fletcher Hall. Free tickets are available now at the box office located at 309 W. Morgan Street in downtown Durham. Box office hours are weekdays from 11:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., weekends from 1:00 p.m. to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to show time.

An Affair to Remember was released in 1957. Hailed as one of the most romantic and passionate films of all time, the film is a remake of a 1939 film called Love Affair, both of which were directed by Leo McCarey. To many audiences, the 1957 version starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr has become a beloved classic, and its status was given a boost in the early 1990s when Nora Ephron employed the film in the story of Sleepless in Seattle. Nickie Ferrante (Grant) is a playboy who has always had a problem with monogamous relationships. Terry McKay (Kerr) is a nightclub singer who is in a serious relationship. Both try to avoid each other, but it doesn't last for long. Soon after returning to New York, they make a pact after six months, if they are still in love, they will meet at the top of the Empire State Building. Nickie shows up, but while waiting, something happens to Terry on the streets below...and the reunion never happens. Will their love truly bring them together again? An Affair to Remember is not rated and runs 119 minutes.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg was released in 1964 and is considered to be one of the most beautiful color films ever made. Jacques Demy's masterpiece of music and romance - winner of the 1964 Cannes Film Festival Grand Prize - catapulted the 20-year-old Catherine Deneuve to international stardom. This restoration, supervised by Demy's widow, Agnes Varda, restores one of the great French classics to its former glory! Genevieve (Deneuve) and her mother run an umbrella shop in 1930s Cherbourg, France. Day in and day out, she pines for Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), a mechanic at a nearby garage. Her mother does not approve of the relationship and constantly urges Genevieve to date other men, but Genevieve and Guy are hopelessly in love. So goes life until, one day, Guy is called to war, and their lives change forever. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is not rated and runs for 92 minutes. It is in French with English subtitles.
