CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

Police say a celebration crowd estimated at 5,000 surged into downtown Chapel Hill after No. 3 North Carolina's 101-87 basketball win over sixth-ranked Duke.

Carolina fans ran downtown from bars and dormitories Wednesday night and filled the streets after the win.

Police stopped a few folks who tried to build bonfires, although some fires were built, including one that was stoked with an old Christmas tree.

The Herald-Sun of Durham reported Thursday that the scene at Duke was somber as fans left the arena.
