RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina tax collections are now more than $1 billion below the revenue projections that lawmakers used in crafting the current year's budget.

Gov. Beverly Perdue's budget office unveiled the figures Wednesday, a week before the governor releases her budget for the next two years.

State Budget Director Charlie Perusse said the revenue shortfall is nearly $1.2 billion through February, the first eight months of the fiscal year. He said that shortfall should widen to a previously announced $2.2 billion by the end of June.

Perusse declined to discuss Perdue's budget except to say the governor is making some tough decisions about spending cuts ahead of Tuesday's proposal. Perdue is expected to provide some clues in a speech Monday.
