DURHAM, N.C. -

Three more communities are added to the list of "Fit Communities" in the state helping North Carolina in becoming the fittest state in America.

The town of Tarrboro, Black Mountain and the city of Jacksonville were awarded the "Fit Community" award Tuesday morning. Lt. Governor Bev Perdue was on hand to award each area with the honor.

"Healthier lifestyles cut down on healthcare which in return helps the entire state," said Perdue.

In order for a community to be designated a "Fit Community" they must support healthy eating habits, physical activity and a tobacco-free living through policy and community infrastructure.

Mayor Bill Bell of Durham was on hand to give a full update on how the city is keeping up with its "Fit Community" title. The city was awarded back in 2006.

"By promoting healthy living, these communities are making a real difference," Lt. Gov. Perdue said. "These ‘Fit Communities' are improving the well being of their residents and helping lead the way to a healthier North Carolina."

Winners of the award will receive a highway sign showcasing their achievement and will be recognizes on the Fit Community website.
