The family that is Carolina, was coming together Monday night, preparing to reflect on the life of murdered student body president Eve Carson.
Eve's life will be celebrated in a special memorial service at the UNC's Dean Dome from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Monday, students returning from spring break were trying to find ways to deal with Eve's loss. Many added their comments to memorial boards that were set up on campus during Spring break.
"We all felt like we know her, because she was such a rare asset to our school," said one student. "She was wonderful in every way."
As the six o'clock bell tolled across the campus, and birds sang, students came to the memorial boards to reflect.
"It's hard to imagine something like this happening to her, of all people," said student Paul Preston. "She deserves some way of being remembered."
For some students, the week's break between Eve's murder and her memorial service didn't make things easier.
"Even though we've had a week since the tragedy, it's been really hard to come back to school and say we're ready to worry about tests and things that become so irrelevant," explained student Mano Angapion.
Signs of Eve Carson are everywhere on campus, from the flags at half-staff, to a special butterfly-shaped seat made especially for her and decorated in Carolina Blue.
"We don't want the horror of what happened overshadow her legacy and forget what she stood for and lived for, said student Carly Brantmeyer. "We need to embrace that."
A memorial fund has been established in her name and her family will determine its ultimate use.
Tuesday's celebration of Carson's life will be observed by thousands, and one student believes it's the perfect way to do it.
"One of her dreams was for all the people she loved to come together in one room, and it will definitely happen [Tuesday]," said Carly Brantmeyer.
