An apartment building went up in flames Monday night and now eight families do not have a place to call home.
The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. at the Ashewyck Commons Apartments off Stewart Street.
Nicole Reynolds was making dinner for her family when it started.
"The whole back porch of the apartment next to us and up one level was engulfed in flames," Reynolds said.
That's where firefighters say the fire broke out. Reynolds is thankful no one was hurt but is also concerned about what her family's going to do next.
"The kids were asking about their Christmas stuff and we had new furniture and everything and right after Christmas we're broke because of Christmas," she said.
Firefighter had one problem while fighting the fire, there was only one fire hydrant on scene.
"We felt like they could have done a lot more because we sat here for so long, they just were sitting here with the hoses out there but no water coming out," said Reynolds.
Fuquay-Varina Assistant Fire Chief Jim Jones says once they were able to get the water, everything went smoothly.
"We had to find another hydrant down the road, it took us a few minutes to get to that, but once we got everything set up, everything went fine," said Jones.
The Red Cross is helping the eight families until they get back on their feet.
No one was seriously injured but firefighters say the building is probably a total loss.
Fire investigators believe the fire was an accident but they will continue their investigation this week to determine the exact cause.
