Johnston Community College now is offering continuing education courses at its new Benson Center.
"From our experience, we know people like to take continuing education classes near where they live," said JCC President Dr. Donald Reichard. "So we wanted to create this new extension of educational opportunities. We are appreciative of the Town of Benson for working cooperatively with the College to make this a reality for all citizens."
Students may enroll in adult education, English as a second language, and computer classes at the Lee Street center. The college worked out a 10-year lease agreements with the Town of Benson for space at the old Benson Middle School, which includes three classrooms, a computer lab and meeting areas.
"It makes it a lot more convenient," said Benson Town Manager Keith Langdon. "We are about 12 to 14 miles from the community college and by having it here, it allows people to get their education or extend their education without having to drive all the way to Smithfield."
Talbert Myers, vice president of continuing education, said hid department is "grateful" to have the opportunity to put a facility in southwest Johnston County.
"This facility helps us in our goal of bringing education and training opportunities to the various communities across the county," he said.
