CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. -
High school students all over Durham County will march today to encourage residents to vote early for the North Carolina primary elections.
The march begins at 10 a.m. at Northern High School and will continue to the North Regional Library early voting site located at 221 Milton Road, according to a written release.
Durham School of the Arts, Hillside High School, Jordan High School, Northern High School, and Durham Academy are some of the schools participating in today’s march. Students are encouraged to attend and parents and faculty are also welcome.
“It's really important for students and young people to see what the political process is like, um, especially being so far away from DC, um, politics can seem like a distant thing,” said Julie Grogan-Brown, organizer The purpose of the march is to remind people they can register and vote at any early voting site in their county of residence for the May 6 primary. Also, people who are 17 years old, but will be 18 by Nov. 4, are eligible to vote in the May 6 partisan primaries. Durham County has three early voting sites and they include the Board of Elections, the North Regional Library, and a site located on NCCU’s campus. All voting locations are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
“You can make a difference, and you do make a difference. If all the young voters came out and vote, we'd be a force, we'd be a power. We'd be heard,” said Kyle Burke, Northern High student.
