Don Stephenson has been selected as the first faculty member at Johnston Community College to receive emeritus status.
Stephenson, a native of Four Oaks and resident of Clayton, was a JCC biology instructor for 26 years. He retired earlier this year.
Stephenson was very active outside of the classroom at JCC serving as president of the Faculty Association from 2001-2005 and on numerous other committees during his tenure. He was named instructor of the year in 1988 and 2001.
Dr. Don Reichard, JCC president, said Stephenson is most deserving of the honor.
"The faculty could not have recommended nor the college chosen a better person than Mr. Don Stephenson to receive the first faculty emeritus award," Reichard said. "He embodies the spirit of the community college -- care for students, care for the college, and care for the community.
Stephenson said he was humbled by the recognition. "The designation of faculty emeritus at Johnston Community College is truly an honor and I am humbled that my efforts over the years are recognized," he said. "I could not have been a part of a better faculty. The staff, administration, and board of trustees have always been supportive and provided me with so many opportunities."
"But most of all, the interaction with the students that came to my classes weekly provided me with the deepest sense of challenge and accomplishment," Stephenson added. The faculty emeritus award is the capstone of an unexpected but deeply rewarding career at Johnston Community College."
Stephenson will be formally recognized for his honor at the College's graduation on May 18.
