The state Department of Insurance has announced the arrest of a North Carolina insurance agent who is accused of embezzling more than $168,000 from a 90-year-old woman and using the money for himself.
Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin said Tuesday 50-year-old Charles Mark Hall is charged with embezzlement by an insurance agent and exploiting disabled or elder trust. Hall's agency is in Smithfield.
Goodwin said Hall embezzled and converted to his own use three separate annuities from the woman. He said Hall convinced the victim to sign surrender forms for her annuities and then took the money without her knowledge or permission.
Hall was placed in the Johnston County jail under $50,000 secured bond. He has also surrendered his agent's license. A sheriff's deputy didn't know if Hall has an attorney.
