Members of City Council adopted a proposed amendment to the Town's towing ordinance during their March 4 meeting.
The new proposal caps fees that towing companies charge at $100 for towing or removal of vehicles and $20 per day for storage.
In a press release from the city it states: "The ordinance as amended requires that if the vehicle owner shows up when the tow truck operator is removing the vehicle and has attached the vehicle to the tow truck, that the operator must release the vehicle to its owner at a charge not in excess of $50. If the vehicle has not been attached, it must be released at no charge."
Spokesman Lt. Gunter said the proposal was written to give citizens consistency because "they never knew what they'd be charged if their car was towed, the rates can vary."
The proposed revisions are similar to those that Raleigh adopted in 2002.
