With the help of the the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, the Kramden Institute will hold its 13th Geek-A-Thon. At the Geek-A-Thon, high-tech volunteers refurbish old computers, and give them to students who don't have a computer a home. More than 130 volunteers including students from NCSSM will man seven shifts from April 4th to April 6th.
At the last Geek-A-Thon held at NCSSM, volunteers set a record by refurbishing 230 computers. "It is great to see the NCSSM students working side by side with our volunteers, many of whom come from Lenovo, IBM, Cisco, SAS, and other high tech companies in the area," said DeWayne Williams, Director of Technology for Kramden Institute. "It is like seeing the future as many of the NCSSM students will be working for those companies in years to come," Williams said.
Habitat for Humanity of Durham teamed up with Kramden to provide free computers to Habitat homeowners with school-age children who don't have computers in their homes. More than 45 families have already received computers. Fourty more families will get free computers at NCSSM on Sunday April 6.
