Durham's Northgate Park is getting a well overdue facelift to its park amenities. In April, construction will begin on a greenway trail. Crews will pull up the existing trail that surrounds the park located in north Durham. New concrete will be laid around the sidewalk, making a trail for walker and joggers.
City officials say the plans for the $600,000 project have been around since 1996 but there was never enough funding.
"I think part of the problem was the '96 funding was never enough to fully fund the renovation that was needed in the park," said Mary Lee Martin, project manager of general service for the city of Durham.
Monies from the 1996 bond went mainly to the master plans while money coming from the 2005 bonds went to construction.
Residents will also enjoy a new playground, which is already under construction. Crews will also replace the roof on the picnic area and repaving the parking lot.
Construction is expected to last through July.
