RALEIGH, N.C. -

MeadWestvaco had plans to expand on N.C. State's Centennial Campus, but now its re-negotiating its lease with the school.

According to a motion approved by the Economic Investment Committee on February 18, 2009, MWV originally intended to locate a project consisting of a pilot plant and research and development for the company's paperboard, packaging and specialty chemical project lines at its Centennial Campus location.

The EIC approved MWV's request to lease commercial space in Garner because the company determined that the Centennial Campus location was not large enough for their project.

The motion goes on to say that most of the investment and a few of the jobs will be located in Garner.

In 2006 MWV was awarded a 10-year contract for a Job Development Investment Grant.

Under the JDIG, MWV must create a specific number of jobs each year to receive the more than $5 million grant from the state.

By the end of 2009 that total needs to be at least 180 jobs.

Under the new guidelines for the project approved by the EIC, MWV's investment in the area will now be more than $20 million instead of just over $12 million.THe

MWV cannot confirm that informaiton at this time, it will only say that its re-negotiating its lease with N.C. State and reviewing future investments as part of their overall cost management strategy
