At 10:43 p.m. while on-duty, a Fayetteville Police Officer was traveling on Grove Street, toward Eastern Boulevard, when a male pedestrian stepped in the pathway of his patrol vehicle and was struck. The officer immediately requested medical assistance and the subject was treated on scene. However, attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead on scene. The subject did not have any identification on him so next of kin have not been notified.
Per departmental policy, the Fayetteville Police Department's Office of Professional Standards is conducting an administrative internal investigation into the incident. The State Highway Patrol and members of Fayetteville Police Department's Traffic Unit are conducting respective investigations as well. The involved officer will be placed on administrative duty until the respective investigations are complete. The investigation is in the preliminary stages, therefore, the name of the officer involved is not being released at this time. The subject's name will be released after the next of kin have been notified.
