CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Chapel Hill High School football player who died suddenly this week has been laid to rest.

Atlas Fraley, 17, died Tuesday just hours after returning home from a scrimmage. His family, coaches, and friends gathered at the Chapel Hill Bible Church Saturday afternoon for his funeral. More than 1,000 people showed up, like family friend Deryle Daniels, to pay their respects and support his family.

"We all know that the most difficult thing arguably in the world is to lose your child,” Daniels said.

Daniels reiterated a message of the ceremony, that Fraley’s life was one to live up to.

"He lived life every day to the fullest and he always greeted you with a smile, and I think it's up to us continue his legacy and to live as he lived,” Daniels said.

Fraley’s close friend Brandon Hunter said part of that legacy is how his friend carried himself.

"No matter how things were going he'd always find a way to get through stuff. He was a very positive person,” Hunter said.

The cause of Fraley’s death is still unknown and two investigations are underway. The Chapel Hill School System is looking at how its personnel reacted during the scrimmage in which Fraley became ill and says initial information indicates proper procedures were followed. Orange County EMS is also looking at how that agency responded after the teenager called 911 complaining of cramps and dehydration.

In Fraley’s obituary, his family reminded people who he was, and said he was a son and a young man with aspirations to be a mechanical engineer and an athlete. Coach Tremaine Powell said Fraley has been called to a much bigger game.

"Just remember the greatest coach, God, needed a soldier with a lot of heart on his team so he got drafted to leave early,” Powell said.

The Chapel Hill High School football team will begin its season without Fraley. Senior teammate Steven Moore said it won’t be easy.

"We're going to play with that chip on our shoulder. We're just going to have to do it -- it's tough but we're gonna do it for him,” Moore said.
