MORRISVILLE, N.C. -

Town officials confirmed Monday morning that former Morrisville Police Chief Robert Whitesell was killed over the weekend.

The motorcycle wreck happened Saturday night in Alamance County.

Whitesell served as Morrisville's Police Chief from 1998 to2003.

"Chief Whitesell came to the Town of Morrisville with 16 years of experience with the Highway Patrol," said Morrisville Police Chief Ira Jones in a statement. "He brought a level of professionalism to the department, transitioning Morrisville from a small town department to a progressive, viable law enforcement agency in Wake County."

North Carolina Highway Patrol officers are still investigating the accident, but a Morrisville spokesperson said neither speed nor alcohol were factors.
