APEX, N.C. -

Apex town leaders want to stick with the original plan when it comes to U.S. 64, they said Tuesday.

The Apex Town Council agreed to adopt the Apex Transportation Plan in the North Carolina Department of Transportation U.S. 64 Corridor Study.

The plan calls for turning U.S. 64 into an expressway, but town leaders say doing so could cause more traffic problems.

Town Manager Bruce Radford said the town is already congested and access is difficult along Highway 64 in Apex and Cary. He said the businesses are already established and changes with Highway 64 could be detrimental to that area.

The council said that it would be beneficial to start the changes to the Highway at the Apex-Chatham County line where there is less development.

"The town has said they support the U.S 64 Corridor Study, that it should be an expressway, but we would like the expressway to begin west of the proposed I-540," said Radford.

The DOT has not yet made a final decision on the project, which is under study.
