APEX, N.C. -

The Town of Apex is working to make the streets safer for residents.

Tuesday, the Apex Town Council will vote to make the traffic calming protocol part of the Unified Development Ordinance, or "UDO."

With the protocol, the residents can request traffic to be monitored by the Apex Police Department for about a week. If there is a speeding problem and a high volume of cars going through the neighborhood, authorities can make recommendations for appropriate changes to the road.

In some area, speed bumps are added. Other neighborhoods receive temporary speed trackers to make the public aware of the problem.

The UDO is a guide for developers and residents when building in town. Apex Police Chief Jack Lewis said adding the protocol to the ordinance will insure developers and residents are on the same page.

"That goes along with the planning. That's what residential developers all try to go by as they build neighborhoods and put in streets. So it's consistence. What we'll have is that everybody will know these are the standards and this is what it takes. You will know how to gauge whether you need traffic calming or not," Lewis said.

The council meeting will take place this Tuesday, June 17 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall on Hunter Street in Apex.
