Authorities today began reviewing the 240 video tapes discovered at the home of a man charged with secretly peeping and depending on what they find, the 58-year-old man could face additional charges.
"It will probably take a considerable amount of time given the number and the fact that we are going to have to go through all of them," said Chief Steve Gillikin, of the Smithfield Police Department. "And, what's going to make it especially difficult is not knowing who your victim's are. So if there is information on those tapes that would make them illegal, we're going to have to identify the victim's and contact them. "
A part-time pharmacist at Johnston Memorial Hospital Ben E. Pell, 58, of East Stevens Street, was released from the Johnston County Jail on a $25,000 bond, Chief Gillikin said. Although investigators have yet to watch all the videos labeled in some cases "Birthday Party" and "Church Social," Chief Gillikin said Pell confessed that some of the tapes were made at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield.
The suspect also told police he taped individuals at a local fitness center and at several North Carolina beaches.
"He's just charged with the one count so far," Chief Gillikin said.
Pell was arrested Saturday night around 10 p.m. According to Chief Gillikin, his 49-year-old female neighbor called police after hearing strange noises outside. Police arrived at the home without using sirens and patrol-car lights to discover Pell in the woman's yard, dressed in black and carrying a video camera.
Jim Perpich, Director of Marketing for Johnston Memorial, said that Pell has retired from full-time status at the medical facility in 2005. He has since been working in the hospital's pharmacy and at Wilson Medical Center on a part-time basis.
He remains suspended from his position at the hospital pending the outcome of the criminal investigation, Perpich said.
