A hurricane hit a Wendell home in 1996 leaving gaping holes in the roof and dangerous weak spots in the floor. Owner Grover Horton had to live with the damage and further deterioration until the community was called into help last month.
"I feel it's a very helpful thing. I had a stroke and every little bit helps," Horton said
The repairs began when Lynn Waide who owns a cleaning service came in to tidy up the home and knew she had to do something. Now, the house is being transformed before Horton's eyes.
"When I was here I realized a lot of his furnishing and plumbing could not be cleaned because it needed to be updated so I decided to try to help him," Waide said.
Waide brought together volunteers from all over. Some donated household items others gave their services, fixing the hole in the roof, bad plumbing and the floor.
"It's a huge blessing to get so many people to step forward," Waide said
Ms. Waide said their goal is to have a safe and comfortable home for Mr. Horton for the holidays.
"He's really excited but set in his ways and is anxious to get back into his house," Horton's nephew Charles Flemming said.
The group hopes to have Horton back in his home by Christmas but Waide said they still need the community's help to make that happen.
Waide said even when Horton gets back into his home their job is not done. She hopes to continue collecting donations to improve other areas of the home.
