RALEIGH, N.C. -

Teens in the Triangle will participate in the 2009 World Vision 30-Hour Famine Feb. 27 and 28.

The teens will get a real taste of hunger while helping to feed and care for children and families living in extreme poverty around the world. They join thousands of teens nationwide aiming to raise $12.5 million this year through 30-Hour Famine.

Last year, 30 Hour Famine raised $12.2 million to help feed children around the world. During the fast, the participants go without food (consuming only liquids), learn about world hunger and poverty, and perform service projects in their communities.

About 26,000 children die each day from hunger, disease and malnutrition. In 2009, funds raised through World Vision's Famine will go to countries where famine, conflict and other humanitarian crises make children and their families vulnerable to hunger. Some of these countries include: Zimbabwe, Haiti, Uganda, Mozambique, and Rwanda.

The famine will take place from noon Friday, Feb. 27 through 6 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28.

Participating students will be at the following locations:

  • North Raleigh United Methodist Church from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
  • Students will sort canned goods and help with various chores at the Raleigh-Durham Food Bank, 708 Gilbert Street, Durham
  • Pullen Memorial Baptist Church - 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • Students will sort canned goods and help with various chores at Wake Relief, 616 Tucker Street, Raleigh from 12:30 - 3 p.m.
  • Students ride around community with Interfaith Food Shuttle to deliver groceries to low-income families. Interfaith Food Shuttle, 1001 Blair Drive, Raleigh.
