HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -

At a special meeting Thursday night, the Town Council gave the go-ahead for staff to move forward and have construction documents prepared for bidding.

The new center would be built behind the current Hunt Center -- that facility would stay open during construction so programs would not be interrupted -- then it would be torn down to make room for parking.

Town staff said now may be the best time to start the project.

"We've already gotten some indications that constructions costs would be significantly lower right now given contractors lack of work," said Mark Andrews, Holly Springs Public Information Officer.\

Town officials said this is something people in town have been asking for.

"We have roughly 10-thousand people a month who go through that facility so it serves a lot of our people here, not only our kids, but our adults, seniors and what else so to have a facility that meets the needs of the community is what I think the board's looking at," said Town Manager Carl Dean.

The proposal for the projected is expected to be ready for the Council's approval this summer.

Then construction will take about 18 months.
