HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -

Some town officials won't have an annual travel budget in the new fiscal year.

After a public hearing, the Holly Springs Town Council passed the 2008-09 operating budget Tuesday.

The budget aims to keep property taxes consistent with last year's rates with a revenue neutral property tax rate. Charges for water and sewer service would go up $1 per month.

However, the budget does not include money for travel expenses that some department heads, including the Mayor and Police Chief, were receiving yearly.

Those vehicle allowances will stop July 1, the same day the new budget will go into effect.

Council members were concerned about the amount of debt the town had.

Members will discuss the pros and cons of having a purchasing department at the next meeting.
