DURHAM, N.C. -

They came in with a roar.

More than 450 motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the country parked their bikes at Duke Children's Hospital to donate toys to the kids.

It was all part of the 7th Annual Christmas in July Toy Run.

"(The kids) are in a situation they'd rather not be in," Organizer William Winford said. "We have an idea that we can bring them another christmas, another day of happiness."

Many bikers sacrifice an entire weekend to participate in the event.

They pay a registration fee and have to donate a toy, not to mention the gas.

However, second year participant Paul Bell says it is well worth it.

"You get out three times what you put into it," he said.

Bell said when the bikers all walk into the hospital and form a chain to bring the toys inside, it makes the event truly unique.

"You're seeing all these big burly guys wearing doorags and street tats and here they are just passing back toys and piling up toys for kids," Bell said. "It's an amazing experience."

They don't get to personally donate toys to the patients because of the risk of infection, but Chris Hooves, the parent of a former patient, says all it took was the toy to let him know someone cared.

"Everybody has busy lives," he said. "That they're giving it up for someone they don't even know, like my son who benefited three or four years ago, is a great thing."

Though they don't vanish with reindeer and a hearty "ho,ho,ho," they still leave a lot Christmas joy in the middle of July.
