Senate Democrats are ready to vote for a $21.4 billion spending plan for state government for the coming year. But few Republicans may be ready to join them.
The Senate scheduled debate and a vote Wednesday on a budget bill that would spend more on higher education and borrow more money compared to the House version passed two weeks ago.
House Republicans overwhelmingly joined Democrats in voting for the chamber's plan. GOP members said that budget had no new taxes and year-to-year spending rose only about 3 percent.
But Senate Minority Leader Phil Berger says he expects a substantial majority of the chamber's Republicans to vote against the budget. He says Senate Democrats could have reduced spending even more and failed to put education on the right track.
