Construction will soon be underway for the first toll road in North Carolina, right here in the Triangle.
Contractors will break ground on the more than $1 billion project within the next two weeks. Turnpike Authority Chief Engineer Steve DeWitt said the project will bring about 2,000 construction jobs to area.
But DeWitt also said the construction will have an impact on the surrounding stores, gas stations, restaurant and other businesses, bringing money and additional jobs.
"There are a lot of side benefits even folks who run convenient stores. There are a lot of places around the corridor where construction workers spent their money for four years out here. So I think it means a lot," DeWitt said.
Federal Highway Administration estimates that for every $1 million dollars spent on transportation, 30 jobs are created. They said this project could create up to 30,000 jobs.
