The North Carolina Senate will be silent before members cast a final vote on their version of the budget for state government.
That's because Senate Democrats cut off all debate on the budget bill Wednesday before the $21.4 billion plan was tentatively approved by a vote of 33-16. The final vote is expected Thursday morning.
Senate Republicans complained they didn't get a chance to discuss the merits of the budget before Democrats ended debate following a handful of amendments. Senate leader Marc Basnight of Dare County says Republicans wanted to offer more amendments designed to put them on the record on a hot-button topic.
Senate and House members will spend next week trying to get a compromise final budget to Gov. Mike Easley before July 1.
