RALEIGH, N.C. -
Lawmakers are considering a plan to boost the amount of money wrongfully convicted people can receive from the state.
A House judiciary panel is scheduled Thursday to discuss a bill to increase the amount of money that vindicated former inmates can receive.
State law allows wrongfully convicted people to receive $20,000 for each year they spent in prison, including any time they spent behind bars awaiting trial.
The plan lawmakers will consider would boost that amount to $40,000 a year. The money they could receive would be capped at $750,000.
To qualify, erroneously convicted people must obtain a pardon of innocence from the governor. Five people have been declared innocent over the last seven years.
