DURHAM, N.C. -

Vandals set fire to church buses early Friday morning, gutting two of them and damaging the two sitting next to them.

"You're thankful there were not any people harmed in any way," said Fellowship Baptist Church Pastor Rick Finley. "A pastor friend of mine in Michigan had three teenagers die in a car wreck yesterday and that puts things into perspective really quickly."

Still, the church on the northeast side of Durham will have to come up with a different game plan this weekend. Vandals damaged a fifth coach bus when they broke into it and stole a DVD player and monitors.

"People who did this are the very people we're trying to help through our ministry," Finley said. "It's frustrating because we're trying to help them and they're trying to hurt what we're doing."

There were 18 buses here total that acted as a means of ministry between this church and the inner-city neighborhoods that sit just to the south of it.

"We operate about 13 to 14 bus routes on the weekend," Finley said. "On Saturdays we have workers who go into these communities and visit these kids. Then on Sundays that same team of workers goes back and provides transportation."

Altogether, about 350 people hop on these buses and go to church on Sundays.

"They're Christians and they always do something nice for us," said Johnathan Lynch, a ten year-old who rides the buses to come here. "Whoever did that - that was a stupid idea."

James Pegram, a 16-year-old who recently became a born-again Christian here in April, said seeing the buses was heartbreaking.

"It's a blessing to have buses that get people who want to know God," he said. "As long as we stay together as a family - we'll be all right."

The lord did this for a reason... Everything happens for a reason and we are not to question why... The OUTCOME will be positive..Buses can be replaced. And the Lord will provide..

Thanks to the Durham community and NBC News 17 for your support. The Lord gave us a wonderful day in church today in spite of the trials that we have faced this week. God is good!
