Raleigh police arrested a 33-year-old man from Louisburg for allegedly driving drunk, causing a fatal crash, and running from the accident.
Police say 33-year-old Cory Henderson attempted to pass another driver, 28-year-old John Ogburn, as he was driving northbound on Old Wake Forest Road early Saturday morning.
At 2:19 a.m., he collided with Ogburn, who was turning into the Brook Forest subdivision, where he lived. Ogburn's car then traveled onto the west curb, separated, and then came back onto the road.
Ogburn was taken to WakeMed, where he later died from his injuries. Two other passengers in Ogburn's vehicle were also taken to the hospital. They survived.
Raleigh police responded to the accident quickly because Sgt. Johnson had been trying to catch up with Henderson as he was driving on Old Wake Forest Road. Johnson saw Henderson flee the accident and go into the woods nearby. Police later caught and arrested Henderson. He has been charged with DWI, felony death by motor vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, felony hit and run and speeding. More charges are pending, police say.
Ogburn's heartbroken mother spoke about the accident Sunday, as family and neighbors met at the site of the crash.
"He was the perfect son. I mean, he was never in any trouble. He always did the right thing. And I was just so blessed to have him," said Anne Ogburn Crowder.
His uncle, George Ogburn, said, "he was just loving life. And then something like this happens."
Sunday morning, neighbors cleaned up pieces of glass and metal that were still on Old Wake Forest Road.
"The whole weekend, I've been shook up with this. And this is something that makes me feel better," said Pete Zografos, a neighbor. "This is the neighborly thing to do."
Ogburn's relatives see this as a tragedy for two families.
"Today we offer all of our sympathies to Mr. Henderson's family because we know that this is as hard on them as it is on us," said Ogburn's aunt, Anne Ogburn.
But they hope he will be punished fairly.
"He certainly ruined my life," said Ogburn's mother. "I want to forgive him for it. But it's just, you know, a little hard right now."

How can you be driving drunk, the law knows it, you hit and kill someone and then make a run for it, then get out of jail on bond? You murdered someone and so many people are having to live with this mistake of one person that is out walking the streets. How is this OK and how does this make any since? He should be in jail with no bond facing murder charges.

This man kills someone because basically he doesn't want to go back to jail and all he gets is a 130,000 dollar bond. What is this country coming to when a killer can get out of jail so easily?
