The City of Raleigh officially has a law school.
"[It was] previously the largest state capitol in the country without a law school," said Melissa Essary, Dean of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University which opened Friday. "There are a lot of opportunities to be had literally, within walking distance for our students."
Just off Hillsborough Street and a stones throw from the towering skyscrapers, legislative building and Capitol, the school boasts state of the art equipment for the 21st century law student.
"It'd be hard to find another school of legal education with this advanced technology of what you have here at Campbell Law School," Director of Development Britt Davis said.
It also has a real-world, business court where actual cases will be tried.
Some equipment is still being moved in, but the school is ready for the students who will be there on Monday.
"We're bringing 410 students, 50 faculty and staff and we have fabulous students," Essary said.
A few blocks away at Caffe Luna, owner Parker Kennedy was excited about the prospect of more business coming to his restaurant.
"We're thrilled that Dean Essary and the Campbell Law School are gonna be here," he said.
Kennedy said he thinks the move will not only be good for his bottom line, but also for the larger community.
"We just think that it's a great thing for downtown Raleigh and Raleigh itself," he said. "It's a great thing for Campbell Law School to be right here in the center of all the legal action in the state."
Today, some students volunteered at various non-profit organizations around the community for the first annual "Campbell Cares," a day of volunteer work for law students.
Though the school is here to educate, faculty members say they aim to do more than that.
"We're here to live out the ideals of the profession, to serve, to give back and to hopefully create a more just and a better place," Essary said.
