CARY, N.C. -

Tuesday night, Cary town officials met with citizens at Dorothy Park on the corner of Griffis and Dorothy.

Both sides are trying to reach an agreement on a stream restoration plan that currently would remove several trees from Dorothy Park.

"The consensus of the neighborhood is we don't want it," resident Chris D'Alessio said.

Dorothy Park is not big, but D'Alessio said it's all his neighborhood has got.

"This park is over 50 years old," he said. "Some of the people in this neighborhood have lived on the block for as long as that and we'd like to preserve the way it is."

D'Alessio is one of the residents upset by the town's planned stream restoration project.

"They want to cut down these trees and change the use of this park," D'Alessop said.

Town officials said the project is necessary.

"We need to do this for a lot of reasons, just to help improve water quality in Cary," Engineering Director Tim Bailey said.

Back when the town widened Maynard Road, they re-directed a stream through some pipes.

It improved the traffic flow but under the law if the town does restoration projects they get credits to use on other construction projects.

"We would end up changing the direction of that stream, the width and depth of that stream and you really just can't get in there and do the work without getting in there and removing trees," Bailey said.

Residents said the trees make Dorothy Park, but even with the meeting some said their voices aren't being heard.

"We have an election in a week, so between now and October 6, we have their attention," D'Alessio said. "On October 7, we're pretty sure they're going to stop paying attention to us, win or lose."

Town leaders disagree.

"In the plans we have, they've been revised based almost solely on the comments we've had in the past," Bailey said.
