Hillsborough police arrested three people and issued citations for 56 violations of N.C. motor vehicle laws during a statewide campaign to crack down on impaired driving.
The date of the .08.08.08 campaign - part of the Governor's Highway Safety Program - correlated with the state's blood-alcohol DWI limit. Officers from the Chapel Hill and Carrboro police departments and from the N.C. Highway Patrol assisted in the Aug. 8 checkpoint.
About 7 to 10 vehicles attempted to avoid the checkpoint. They were stopped and allowed to continue on their way if no violations were found.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving North Carolina provided food, snacks and beverages for the officers who worked the checkpoint, and Orange County Rescue Squad provided lighting.
"I would like to thank each and everyone who participated or assisted with the checkpoint in making it a very successful event," said Sgt. William Parker, who is in charge of Special Enforcement and Special Operations for the Hillsborough Police Department.
