Wake County's Historic Yates Mill County Park, 4620 Lake Wheeler Road, Raleigh, will hold its third annual Harvest Celebration, on Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Citizens are invited to join park staff and volunteers for a fun-filled day.
The event will feature harvest-related demonstrations, contests and hands-on activities for the entire family. Activities include wheat straw weaving, corn shuck doll-making, corn-shucking and cob-throwing contests, children's storytelling, dance performances and live old-time music.
Musical acts Mountain Aires, Possum Road, and Wayne and Margaret Martin will perform. A variety of dance and story-telling groups will also provide entertainment. A full event schedule is available at www.wakegov.com/parks/yatesmill/events/.
Historic Yates Mill, Wake County's last operable water-powered gristmill, will be open for half-hour tours and corn-grinding demonstrations conducted by 19th century costumed interpreters. Tours are $5 per adult, $3 for seniors (60+) and students (6-16). Children under six years old are free. Volunteers from the non-profit group Yates Mill Associates will sell Yates Mill stone-ground cornmeal and other merchandise. All proceeds support the mill's ongoing operation and maintenance.
Popcorn and hushpuppies will be given away throughout the event. Roasted corn on the cob, corn dogs, BBQ sandwiches and other refreshments will be available for purchase.
Visitors to the park are also encouraged to compete in the "Cornmeal Cook-off" contest and the "Corn Cob Craft" display. For more information, or to participate in either of these contests, call Historic Yates Mill County Park at 856-6675 or visit www.wakegov.com/yatesmill.
