SILER CITY, N.C. -

The closing of two plants in Chatham County have left many people out of a job and struggling to provide for their families.

Over 985 workers were laid off at the Pilgrim Pride chicken plant last May and over 100 people were forced to leave their jobs at 84 Lumber. Now, a Chatham County church is helping to provide food for the families but they need support from others in the community.

Nicole Busch has been struggling to put food on the table for her little girl Lily ever since May when her husband was laid off.

"There's nothing. I've been putting out applications everywhere and there is nothing to find. Things have been bad," Busch said.

She turned to the Pentecostal Victory Church to help make ends meet. The church is open to the public everyday, passing out everything from fruit and veggies to bread and water.

"It keeps food on the table and for people who don't have anything; they can pay their bills instead of buying expensive groceries," Busch said.

Jeff Teague also lost his job after 25 years and he said this outreach program has been his lifeline.

"With this situation you can't find a job at my age or any age. If it wasn't for the church I don't know if I, my wife and my son would have made it. Times are really hard," Teague said.

From April to June the church served over 5,000 people and that's up about a 1,000 people from last year. But the organizer of the outreach program Margret Rakes said lately they're running out of food in record time.

Rakes said the shelves used to be packed with food but now they are bare and the church needs more donations than ever.

"People have no money and with no money you can't do. So after these people lost their jobs they come here for food and we try to help everybody," Rakes said.

Rakes said the church can only do so much, they need community donations to continue helping these people get an meal, despite the difficult times.

For more information you can call Margaret Rakes at 919-200-2502 or the Pentecostal Victory Temple at 919-742-5727.
