An Apex teenager accused of raping an elderly woman made his first appearance in court Monday.
Gavin Clevesy, 17, is behind bars facing a slew of charges after a couple faced a terrorizing night Saturday in their affluent Cary neighborhood.
He faces up to life in prison.
Cary Police on Saturday night arrested Clevesy and charged him with first-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, rape and burglary, among other charges.
Police said Clevesy had been attending a party in the area and was under the influence of alcohol when he was wandering Cary’s affluent McGregor Downs neighborhood around 9 p.m. Saturday.
After knocking on several doors on Edinburgh Drive, Clevesy allegedly went to another home where a couple in their 60s was home, according to Cary Police Capt. Michael Williams.
"He knocked on the door, and when the male party switched the door to unlock, he kicked the door in and went inside," Williams said.
Williams said the man and woman were beaten with a statue from inside their home.
When the woman escaped the home to get help, police say Clevesy caught up with her in a nearby park.
Police say that’s when she was sexually assaulted and raped.
But a group of people driving by spotted the trouble and was able to save the woman, Williams said.
"They saw the assault taking place. They got out and intervened and were able to detain the subject," he said.
Police said Clevesy was arrested and taken to Wake County Jail and is being held in lieu of $2.5 million bail, while both victims were taken to WakeMed in Raleigh.
"The citizens do not face this type of crime regularly. This is an isolated incident, that’s a very traumatic incident," Williams said.
Residents in the neighborhood were in shock Sunday.
Bruce and Mable Howell have lived in the neighborhood for 28 years and said they don’t remember a crime like this.
"Our neighborhood is probably safer than the average neighborhood even in Cary," Bruce Howell said.
Clevesy's next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 20.
